Japanese Elm, Ulmus japonica
The japanese elm counts to the semitropical plants and must be protected against frost. Depending on its location, the Chinese Elm loses some or all of its leaves in winter. When it has lost its leaves, the shoots can be trained into shape using wires and guy wires in early spring. It tolerates regular pruning well, and this gives it denser branches.
Location:
This bonsai should be located in a sunny to partly shaded spot outdoors from spring until autumn. In summer, the bonsai should be protected from the very hot mid-day sun. If the weather is bad (windy and rainy), the tree grows sturdier and gains resistance against diseases and pests, and the leaves grow harder. It needs good ventilation and sufficient light.
Winter storage:
The tree is not hardy, and must be brought into a cool space, e.g. a greenhouse, where it can spend the winter at a temperature between five and ten degrees. If it is kept in a warmer spot over the winter, this bonsai will retain its leaves, but this weakens the tree and makes it susceptible to diseases.
