Chinese Pepper, Zanthoxylum piperitum, Indoor Bonsai
The Chinese Pepper is characterised by its yellowish-green bark. Unlike the Japanese Pepper, the Chinese variety does not have sharp thorns. Its unevenly pinnate leaves have an attractive, fresh green colour and a very shiny surface. In its natural environment, the Elephant Tree partially drops its leaves in winter, but if it is positioned in a bright location, with temperatures above 15 C, it will retain its leaves.
Location:
In summer, it is best located in the open air. It should be placed in a spot that is sunny or partly shady. However, this bonsai can also do well indoors, if situated by a bright, sunny window. If the weather is bad (windy and rainy), the tree grows sturdier and gains resistance against diseases and pests, and the leaves grow harder.
Winter storage:
The Elephant Tree is not hardy. The tree counts to the tropical plants. It is best to store it in a cool indoor space at a temperature of 12 - 18°C, so that the tree can rest over the winter period. You can also keep the Elephant Tree in a warmer location, but if you do this, you must make sure that it has a lot of light, and some air humidity. The best way to achieve this is to place the tree on a tray that is filled with crushed lava. Any extra water is retained in the layer of lava, and it evaporates slowly. This creates a very good climate for the tree.
