Bonsai Olive Tree, Olea europaea
The olive tree is a hardy plant. This tree, with its knotty trunk, grey bark and tiny leaves, is an absolute gem in any bonsai collection. The olive tree’s white blossoms appear in late spring or summer. After the white blossoms are pollinated, they produce olives.
Location:
In summer, the olive tree does well indoors, in front of a bright, sunny window. It needs good ventilation and sufficient light. However, the olive tree prefers an outdoor location. If the weather is bad (windy and rainy), the tree grows sturdier and gains resistance against diseases and pests, and the leaves grow harder.
Winter storage:
The tree is not hardy, and must be brought into a cool space, e.g. a greenhouse, where it can spend the winter at a temperature between five and ten degrees. The tree should not be brought in to its winter location until the temperature has fallen below zero degrees, however. This exposure toughens the olive tree up.
