Japanese White Pine, Pinus penthphylla, Outdoor-Bonsai
The Japanese White Pine is a conifer. At the end of the summer, the older needles start to turn yellow, and they fall throughout the winter until springtime. You can remove these needles, if you want to. The Japanese White Pine is a very popular bonsai because of its attractive bark and short needles.
Location:
It requires a sunny position in the open air. In summer, the bonsai should be protected from the very hot mid-day sun. It does not tolerate extremely hot temperatures very well. It should be noted, however, that any branches which are constantly in the shade can die off.
Winter storage:
Asian pine trees are less hardy in winter than European pine trees. It is therefore better to place the Japanese White Pine, at temperatures from minus three to minus five degrees, in a frost-free room, such as a garage or cold house. If it is left outdoors in winter, it requires sun, wind and root protection. This is done by lowering the root either with its dish, or without its dish, into the earth, and covering it with leaves and branches. As soon as the temperatures are reliably frost free, the winter protection must be removed, to prevent mould from forming underneath. If the weather remains very dry for a long period, it should be watered on frost-free days.
