Dawn Redwood, Metasequoia, Forest, Outdoor-Bonsai
The Dawn Redwood is a deciduous conifer. In autumn, the foliage changes colour, and then falls as winter approaches. The new shoots do not start growing until the following spring. Great care must be taken with the delicate fronds when the tree is being wired. New shoots are pinched off, so that many adventitious buds can form. The Dawn Redwood can only be grown as a straight, upright tree, with branches sweeping downwards.
Location:
The Dawn Redwood is an outdoor bonsai. It prefers a spot in the open air, that is sunny to partly shady. Protect the tree from direct sunlight, because the sensitive foliage is easily scorched, especially when the plant substrate is not moist enough.
Winter storage:
Must be protected from hard frost. If it is left outdoors in winter, it requires sun, wind and root protection. This is done by lowering the root either with its dish, or without its dish, into the earth, and covering it with leaves and branches. As soon as the temperatures are reliably frost free, the winter protection must be removed, to prevent mould from forming underneath. If the weather remains very dry for a long period, it should be watered on frost-free days.
