Korean Hornbeam, Carpinus coreana, Outdoor-Bonsai
The Korean Hornbeam has beautifully small leaves and is very popular with bonsai collectors. The lovely, deciduous leaves turn yellow/orange in autumn, adding to the distinctive beauty of this little tree. The Korean Hornbeam takes well to cutting and is very sturdy. This makes the Korean Hornbeam very suitable for Bonsai beginners.
Location:
It prefers to be in the open air, in a sunny to partly shady spot. On hot summer days, it is better to place it in a partly shady to shady location. You should protect it from late frost in early spring.
Winter storage:
This Korean Hornbeam is hardy. The Bonsai is planted in a pot but has only limited hardiness. If it is left outdoors in winter, it requires sun, wind and root protection. This is done by lowering the root either with its dish, or without its dish, into the earth, and covering it with leaves and branches. As soon as the temperatures are reliably frost free, the winter protection must be removed, to prevent mould from forming underneath. If the weather remains very dry for a long period, it should be watered on frost-free days. Please note: the dish could potentially be damaged by heavy frost.
