Trident maple, Acer buegeranium, Outdoor Bonsai
The trident maple, Acer buegeranium, is a deciduous tree with relatively small leaves. It sheds its leaves at the end of the growing season. The trident maple is very strong, grows vigorously, and takes cutting well. This makes the trident maple very suitable for Bonsai beginners.
Location:
An outdoor spot is best. This should be sunny to semi-shady and have plenty of ventilation. If there is no sunlight at all, the trident maple can be vulnerable to harmful fungi.
Winter storage:
As with most outdoor Bonsai trees, this trident maple (planted in its dish) is only partly able to withstand winter conditions. That is why the Bonsai should only be exposed to light frosts, i.e. temperatures no lower than -4°C. If there is frost, it is better to place the trident maple in a frost-free area for a while, for example in a garage or cold storage space. The temperature should not be allowed to go over five or six degrees, however. The plant must maintain its winter hibernation phase. Please note: in spring, the new buds should be protected from late frosts.
