Cork Bark Maple, Acer palmatum arakawa, Outdoor-Bonsai
The Japanese palmate Cork Bark Maple is an outdoor bonsai. It loses its leaves at the end of the growing season. The leaves change colour throughout the year. In summer the leaves are green They turn brilliant red in autumn. As its name suggests this tree has a rough grey-brown bark that looks very like cork. The Cork Bark Maple is a vigorous upright variety of maple.
Location:
The location is outdoors in a sunny to semi-shaded place which is sheltered from the wind. If the temperature is not too high, full sun can also be also tolerated but please note: In spring when new shoots are breaking and in summer protect the tree from direct midday sun.
Winter storage:
The maple is planted in a pot but has only limited hardiness. It is therefore better to place the maple, at temperatures from minus three to minus five degrees, in a frost-free room, such as a garage or cold house. The temperature should not be allowed to go over five or six degrees, however. The plant must maintain its winter hibernation phase. Please note: in spring, the new buds should be protected from late frosts.
